CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Keep Your Friends Close and Rival Coaches Closer

The rules at Merlin’s Academy for Boys were far more relaxed for teachers than at Vega’s school. No one came knocking on Castor’s door, insisting she be thrown out, even when she stayed the night snuggled up in his arms.

She hadn’t realized how much she needed the physical release of sex until it was over, and she lay beside him in exhaustion. He was as much of an Adonis in bed as he was with his clothes on.

In the morning, Vega rose extra early to go back to Lady of the Lake School for Girls. She didn’t miss her own room and her roommate, but she wouldn’t be able to avoid Karen Kazmere forever. Castor had been the perfect diversion.

Vega sat on the edge of his bed sliding her stockings on while Castor stirred under the blankets beside her. His room was dark, not even a hint of daylight peeking through his window yet. Fortunately, Vega’s eyes were made for darkness, her sight enhanced by her Fae ancestry. Or it might have been enhanced by her demonic heritage.

Castor yawned. “Leaving so soon? I bet it isn’t even five.”

She ruffled his hair. “I have to get ready. I have lessons.”

“You’re such a good teacher. When will I get to be teacher’s pet again?” He lifted the edge of her blouse that she’d just tucked into her skirt and kissed the skin above her waistline.

She turned and ran her fingers through his hair. “Teacher’s pet or pet the teacher?”

“Mmm. Both.” He wrapped his arms around her waist.

“That depends on how busy we are with teaching and coaching duties, don’t you think?”

“I think you mean if I tempt you again.”

She planted a kiss on his lips. “You definitely tempt me, but I have . . . commitments. I have to make sure my students are safe.” She was their coach. She was responsible for them now. “I have to figure out who hurt my student.” It was up to her to ensure nothing like that happened to any of her other students.

She turned her attention back to her clothes and felt around in the dark for her heels.

He yawned and stretched, as lithe as a tiger—which he had been in bed. “It wasn’t the students at Merlin’s.”

“So you claim, but you don’t know that.” She stood and reached into her pocket portal, fumbling for her broom. Flying to the portal would save her time so she could work on her lessons when she returned.

Castor ran a hand through his rakishly tousled black hair. “If our team was pulling pranks on rival teams, don’t you think I would know about it? The only principal who has accused our students of pranks is yours. I take it someone booby-trapped a stairwell to an athletic shed.”

How did he know about the incident that had started everything? Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. She reminded herself he wasn’t the enemy. He wasn’t behind the attack.

She smoothed her lips into a smile.
